Asher JohnstonAFTER DOMINATING the category for almost two seasons, Adelaide's Asher Johnston has returned to the ranks of Formula Vee racing after a two year absence in a search for even more success.

Johnston, 21, will tackle the Formula Vee National Series in 2009 and despite an abbreviated run at the recent Australian Nationals at Winton, the former Victorian and South Australian state champion remains confident of success next season.

Johnston made the Australian debut of the British constructed GAC chassis at the weekend with significant interest generated in one of the UK's most successful Formula Vee chassis.

GAC Chassis finished 1st, 2nd and 4th in this year's British championship after taking the title in 2007 as well. The constructor has also tasted success in Germany and the United States and is now looking to Australia's competitive market for more success.

Johnston's Asher Johnston Racing team has worked closely with the GAC factory in the construction of the new #18 car that Johnston will race throughout 2009.

"Alan Woodward from GAC has been fantastic in making this all happen, we couldn't have done it without his help," Johnston said.

"From the few sessions we did at Winton - before teething problems struck - I could feel that the car has massive potential and I'm excited about testing it over the summer to get the car ready for next year."

"We assumed a few things at the Nationals because it was such a rush to get ready - but we'll be very ready for next season and I know the car will be competitive. Even with our short run the interest the car generated was massive and a lot of people were impressed with the car and its design and construction."

After a year out of the seat, Johnston was pleased to get back behind the wheel after winning the Victorian State Formula Vee 1600cc title in 2006 before finishing a close second in the 2007 Formula Ford title.

A lack of budget forced the Glenelg resident out of the seat for 2008, Johnston spending the year planning his 2009 attack. "We built this car with the 2009 Nationals Series (Running with the Shannons Nationals) in the back of our minds," he said.

"I'm extremely proud of what we achieved getting us to Winton this year, it was a long process with a lot of late nights, but 2009 was always the goal and anything else was just a bonus. The big picture looks pretty good from my point of view - it's also great to be back in my own car again!"

Asher Johnston Racing would like to thank the continued support of Kevin Hill, Leon Gagliardi, Alan Woodward and GAC and the AJR Sponsors including Cartek, Duplex IT, Wayne Richards Auto, Bridge Crash, Exhaust Technology and Taylor made Branding.
