South Australian State Championships
Round 2 1-3 May 2009
picture to the right shows the look on my face for the
majority of the weekend at Mallala. After a successful
test only weeks prior, we were languishing, over a second
per lap slower on Friday. A late night at Kev's place
Friday night yielded little in qualifying, which was marred
by a roll over at the Northern Hairpin.
Qualifying 4th, there was no improvement in position by the end of the first race, despite being as high as 2nd place. Race 2 was a similar scenario; however I managed to squeeze past for 3rd late in the race.
Leon, Tommo and I had our noses in data until quite late in the evening again, trying to figure out a solution.
Sunday started better. I got a blinder start and was leading by the first corner, and from there was unchallenged for the rest of the race. Our lap times however did not improve, leading us to think that everyone else had slowed, rather then us getting quicker.
I managed to win race 4 as well and started from pole for the final. I dropped to 2nd at turn 1 before the safety car came out for an incident behind me. It was quickly cleared and I passed back into the lead around the outside in the braking zone into the Northern Hairpin. I got a small break but not for long and I fell back to 2nd for the remainder of the race.
2nd in the final gave me the round win and we've extended our lead in the championship, good result from a bad weekend.
My thoughts now are on the two National rounds coming up at Mallala and Winton. We test in a fortnight and need to get ourselves back on track so we can take it to the NSW boys.
When the going gets tough, the tough get going, and my team worked so hard over the 3 days. Dad, Kev, Leon and Tommo gave 110% as always, and its because of them we salvaged a good result. Also big thanks to Shane from Cartek, who was there on Friday to help, Duplex IT, Tony and Just from Drive to Live, GAC, Race Torque Media and AGsportspix for their continued support.
